I have been working on the studio for about a month now and it’s really starting to look good. But now I need to take a break and make some music. I’ll be back to work after I have finished some tracks. And I’m sure some people would prefer some new music over some more pictures of wood.

Building a Studio: A Fresh Start

It took me a while to get the space ready for a clean start. But that chapter is done. So from now on, no more posts about breaking things, I’m in building mode.

To start I put up some insulation on the basement’s front wall. It’s the only wall that gets contact with the outside. Next up was outlining a wall and door. This wall will be more than half a meter thick and it will work both as a sound lock and a bass trap. More on this later. Right now I’m working on the ceiling, which is going to be completely shaped from triangular pieces of wood. And that takes time, but I’m sure the results will be very cool. Stay tuned!

Building a Studio: Layers

It looks like I’m finally getting trough the deepest layers of wallpaper and fake walls and ceilings. Pretty amazing what people can do to a place over the years, and what beautiful things get hidden under ugliness.

Tearing away these final layers also means I’m getting closer to the actual building of the studio. And it’s the construction phase which I have been dreaming about for a while now.

Building a Studio: Out with the Old…

Things are moving along in the studio. A lot of them are actually moving out the door because they need to go. Old and dirty wallpaper, an ugly ceiling, a wall that was in the way, some old books from the eighties that were still in the basement, and just a whole lot of crap that has been collected over the years.

But there’s also some new things coming into the building: central heating! Until now this is the first thing I couldn’t do myself, so the pros came in for two days and fixed me up with a nice collection of tubes and radiators.

All in all, it’s starting to look like something is actually happening.

Building a Studio: Love at First Sight

The time has come to take it up a notch and build a real studio. I found a nice space in Antwerp which needs loads of work, and I’ll post my progress here as I go along.

Even before having a room and any studio equipment I was downstairs in the hallway crammed in between the hamsters and the closet.
Not really making my own music yet, but mostly listening to music and making mix-tapes. Without internet things were different, I wonder what would have happened when we had something like Soundcloud back then.
